G R E E T I N G S

As Mayor and on behalf of the City of Chicago, I welcome all attending the CoolGlobes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet exhibit.

CoolGlobes uses public art to inspire individuals and organizations to take action against global warming. Chicago has spurred the development of green roofs, added hybrid buses to the city’s mass transit system, launched a bike initiative encouraging Chicagoans to bike rather than drive and expanded a separate collection recycling program. The Chicago Conservation Clubs, developed by the Department of the Environment, bring teachers and students together to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods through after-school service projects that protect our water, clean our air, restore our land and save our energy.

Working together, we can move toward a more environmentally sustainable future and help make Chicago the most environmentally friendly, greenest city in the nation through simple changes in our daily life and business operations. We can, for example, replace light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs); turn off the tap when brushing our teeth; replace at least one car trip per month with walking, biking or public transit; plant or care for a city tree by watering, mulching or removing litter; and replace plastic shopping bags with reusable shopping bags.

It is my hope that the CoolGlobes exhibit will spur other innovative programs and solutions to the challenges we face as a city and nation.

Sincerely,

Mayor, City of Chicago
Honorary Co-Chairman, CoolGlobes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet
